AI Translations lets your operators chat in their own language while Smartsupp automatically translates messages both ways — so you can help customers anywhere in the world, even in languages you don't speak. It's available to all Smartsupp accounts.
We've broken the article into a few sections:
What is AI Translations?
AI Translations removes the language barrier between your team and your customers. When a visitor writes in a language different from yours, Smartsupp translates their message into your language — and translates your reply back into theirs — automatically and in real time.
It works at the conversation level: once translation is on for a conversation, every following message is translated both ways until the conversation ends.
💡 Tip: Translations are shared across all operators on a conversation at no extra cost. If a colleague takes over, they see the same translated thread.
How it works
Here's what happens once translation is active in a conversation:
Incoming messages from the customer are translated into your language.
Your replies are translated into the customer's language before they're sent.
The conversation language is detected automatically.
Clear indicators and status messages show you when translation is on.
Each operator can set a preferred language and exclude languages they already speak (see more Language settings below).
Turn on translation in a conversation
There's nothing to set up in advance. When Smartsupp detects that a conversation is in a language different from yours, a prompt appears above the conversation:
"It seems like the conversation is in another language. Translate"
Click Translate to turn translation on for the whole conversation. From that point, every message is translated both ways automatically.
🟡 Good to know: Turning on translation for a conversation costs 5 AI credits. You're charged once per conversation — not per message.
Manage an active translation
Once translation is on, you can manage it directly from the conversation. Click the translation icon at the top of the conversation to open the AI Translations menu — the green check means translation is active, and the menu shows your translation usage (for example, 10/500).
From this menu you can:
Correct language — if Smartsupp detected the wrong language, set the correct one.
Preferences — open your translation preferences (the same settings as in Settings > Multilingual).
Disable translation — turn translation off for this conversation.
While translation is active, Smartsupp shows clear indicators so you always know what's happening:
an "Auto-translating from: [language]" banner at the top of the conversation,
a "Translated from: [language]" label under translated messages,
and a note above the reply box: "The message will be translated automatically after sending to: [language]."
Language settings for operators
To control how translation works for you, open Settings > Multilingual. Here you can configure:
Translation language — the language you want incoming messages translated into. This is usually your native or preferred language.
Other languages — languages you already understand and can reply in. Conversations in these languages won't show the translation prompt.
Automatic language detection — when turned on, Smartsupp alerts you whenever a conversation is in a language other than yours.
Each operator manages their own preferences, so everyone on your team can work in the language that suits them best.

AI credits and pricing
AI Translations runs on AI credits — the same credits used by the AI Reply Assistant.
One translated conversation costs 5 AI credits.
Credits are shared with the AI Reply Assistant, so both features draw from the same balance.
Need more credits? You have the same options as with the AI Reply Assistant — adjust your plan, or contact our sales team for higher volumes.
💡 Want to make the most of your AI credits? See AI Reply Assistant — it uses the same credit balance to help you write and improve replies.
Not the language feature you're looking for?
AI Translations (the Multilingual section) is only about translating messages between operators and customers. If you want to do something else with languages, here's where to go:
Show your chat box interface in different languages on a multilingual website → Multi-language chat box (API needed).
Run chatbot conversations in several languages → Multi-language chatbots.
An automatic shopping assistant that replies in the visitor's language → Mira AI Shopping Assistant.
What's next?
AI Reply Assistant — let AI draft and polish your replies, using the same AI credits.
Multi-language chat box (API needed) — show the widget interface in each visitor's language.
Multi-language chatbots — build a separate chatbot for each language.
Which package should I choose? — compare plans and AI credit options.
